Make time don’t find it
I want to start this post by giving rounding up my first two weeks of competition prep. I’m not going to lie to you… it’s not as easy as I thought it would be! I want to be the first one to hold my hands up and give all those competitors a massive round of applause and the glory they deserve, this is serious stuff!
Dedication to the point of perfection, there’s no straying from the plan, if you’re going to ruin all your hard work by having even the tiniest little cheat then it’s really not worth doing it.
It came to the end of my second week and it was time to send my coach an update on various things, I’d kept to my meal plan 100%, I’d rocked my training all week, both in the mornings and the evening, my weight was down and I could even see a change in my body from the previous week, things looked good. But I was desperate for something naughty… even as I’m sat here writing, my mouth is beginning to water… I wanted everything that I wasn’t allowed and seeing Craig have his regular re-feed that week was killing me.
It’s the forbidden fruit I guess, as soon as you’re not allowed something you want it more than ever before, and oh my… that chicken wrapped in thick bacon with grated cheese and BBQ sauce drizzled across it needed to be in my belly! But no… stinking cod and avocado salad for me.
I got an email notification saying that my coach had written back to me on the forum, I gave the email a quick look and saw there were a couple of changes to make to this weeks training and that was that. I was pretty down as I really hoped that these last two weeks of mega hard work would deliver a little reward… a cheat meal. But hey, maybe next weekend, chin up and keep up the hard work.
It wasn’t until later that afternoon when Craig asked me to read up on something my coach had written to me previously that I logged onto the forum and looked at my coaching thread…. all of a sudden I went NUTS!!!! I was screaming with excitement and jumping around like a loon, stamping my feet and shaking my fists in the air as if I’d just won the lottery! It would appear that the email notification only showed part of the message, here was what I had missed;
In place of your last meal today have one of the following
cheese pizza/ ice cream
Burger and fries/ice cream
some type of pasta dish/ice cream
This will increase leptin and reset the metabolism……..enjoy…
Wooo hoooo!! So as soon as I’d finished my HIIT cardio we were ordering Domino’s, oh Texas BBQ, you beauty;
Man was I stuffed after filling my belly, but it was so worth it, who knows when I’ll get another cheat? All I can say is thank you Craig for making me check my coaching thread and thank you Paul for letting me eat something so deliciously naughty!
I’ve been exhausted recently and I’m under no illusions that it’s because I’ve got so much on my plate right now, but there are just too many opportunities that I really don’t want to miss! So I’m determined to make it all work, and what’s more I’m determined to make it all fit within the time I have available.
I’ve got a pretty ridiculous schedule at the moment, here’s a little look into a typical day for me;
05:30 – Wakeup, shower, dress etc.
06:00 – Take Duplo for a walk (if i’m on time)
06:30 – Meal 1
06:40 – Walk to the Gym
07:00 – Training
08:00 – Into the office and start work (main job)
08:30 – Meal 2
11:30 – Meal 3
14:30 – Meal 4
16:00 – Finish work and walk home
(Craig goes to the gym)
17:30 – Meal 5 with the kids
18:00 – Food prep and bag packed for the morning
18:30 – Kids bathed and dressed for bed
19:00 – Snuggles, stories and kids to bed
19:30 – Evening cardio
20:00 – Back to PC to start work again, (this time my freelance work)
20:30 – Meal 6 with Craig
23:00 – Meal 7 with Craig
23:45 – Finish working and bed time at last!
I’ll put my hands up and say that yes, I like to have a good whinge every so often about how tired I am etc, etc and you might think that if I’m moaning about something that much then why do it?
Well the truth is that if I wasn’t doing all of these extra things already then I’d find something else to fill my time up with, I like to be busy, it’s that simple!
I’ve come to realise though, that there are some areas of my schedule that take up far too much valuable time that I could be spending with my kids. My training times are before the family wake up and after they go to bed so, there’s not much room for improvement there. But my food prep could certainly use some work.
So I decided that I was going to turn myself into the ‘bag lady‘… No, not the one who walks down the high street with a shopping trolley full of nick naks and what nots.
Instead, I have planned to spend one entire morning a week cooking, weighing out, labelling, preparing and freezing ALL of my meals each day for whole following week. Not exactly a glamorous way to dine but if it means I get to spend an extra 40 minutes or so each evening with my monsters then it’s well worth it!
This way I can literally grab the days food from the freezer and put it in the fridge the night before. Then in the morning I’ll just throw it into my bag on my way out the next day and eat or heat each meal up when I need it – job done!
Here’s my first mass food prep attempt, which actually only consisted of half of the food I eat for 2 days;
And another good reason to do this…. no monster Tupperware mountains to wash up either! Bonus!
One thing that bugs the hell out of me is when someone says ‘I just don’t have the time for that‘ … now this is purely my own opinion and not meant to offend anyone reading, but to me when I hear someone say that, all I hear is ‘I can’t be bothered to do that‘.
In my book you either want to do something or you don’t – be honest about it and say you ‘don’t want to do it‘ instead of using time as an excuse.
If it’s something that’s really important to you, then you wont ‘find‘ time for it you’ll MAKE time for it.
